CHAPTER 25

Mr. Adams sat in the boardroom, stroking his chin and nodding as if in disbelief.

“I’m most terribly surprised and very sorry. I choose my staff carefully, and I treat the yard boys and drivers well, they have little cause for complaint. Mr. Shanahan was a touch colorful but a real grafter, capable of delivering twice as many orders as any other worker. I fear I am at a loss. I will, of course, make up any shortfall in the meal or other goods you may discover. It’s all very disappointing.”

William sat forward, peering sympathetically at the older man. His left eye was now a dark purple, snapped shut and swollen level with his brow.

“We will have to make a report to the Board, but since Mr. Shanahan has absconded, there is little point in making a complaint to the civil authorities. We don’t want to stain the reputation of your business or cause a further upset. It’s best that we deal with the matter internally.”

“I’m very grateful for your discretion. I won’t forget your kindness and goodwill. If there is anything I can do by way of recompense, a donation of some nature, I will be happy to do so. But what of the innkeeper, Mr. Marsh, he needs to make some compensation, I would expect?”

“A useless drunk. We paid the premises a visit. Mr. Marsh was too intoxicated to hold a conversation. His wife was quite amenable though, and deeply apologetic.”

Here William allowed a brief pause while he smiled, “Then she was suddenly furious and set upon him. He got a good thrashing for our benefit, cowering in the corner while she whipped him with a wet cleaning cloth. Squealed like a scalded cat before she relented. I don’t think we need concern ourselves unduly; he has been punished enough!”

Both men managed a hearty laugh, the levity clearing the air of serious concerns before they shook hands and parted.
